A new interchange will soon be open on Interstate 4 (I-4) in Orange County. Three new ramps will open as soon as July 19, transforming the Daryl Carter Parkway overpass into a new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) in Central Florida's popular attractions area. The new DDI will give motorists more choices and is expected to help provide relief to nearby interchanges at Apopka-Vineland Road (State Road (S.R.) 535), Central Florida Parkway, and Sand Lake Road (S.R. 482). The new DDI will allow drivers to exit I-4 at Daryl Carter Parkway from both directions, and a new eastbound I-4 entrance ramp will allow local motorists easier access to the interstate. A westbound entrance ramp is planned as part of a future project. The new DDI will be more efficient than a standard interchange, as it moves traffic from the right side of the roadway to the left at a traffic signal, and motorists return to the right side of the road at a second signal after crossing over I-4 on the overpass. This design eliminates left turns to access I-4 or Daryl Carter Parkway, which eliminates left-turn traffic signal phases and left turns across oncoming traffic. This makes DDIs safer by reducing the frequency and severity of crashes and limiting the number of places vehicles cross paths or merge.
