The “Soviet Army Hymn” (originally titled “Invincible and Legendary” – Несокрушимая и легендарная) is a Soviet military song composed in 1943, with lyrics by Osip Kolychev and music by Aleksandr Alexandrov, the composer of the Soviet national anthem and founder of the Red Army Choir. It was written to mark the 25th anniversary of the Red Army during the height of World War II, and its original version strongly referenced the Siege of Leningrad, the Battle of Stalingrad, and praised Joseph Stalin by name. Following Khrushchev’s 1956 denunciation of Stalin’s personality cult, all direct references to Stalin were removed, and the song continued under the title “Song of the Soviet Army.” After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it remained in use in Russia as “Song about the Russian Army.” For decades it served as the grand finale of Red Square military parades and is still frequently performed on Victory Day, with adaptations also produced in East Germany and China, reflecting its broader role as a symbolic military anthem within the socialist bloc.
