And then they became 5. As often happened since the beginning of this eruption, what appeared to be a relatively quiet moment, was just the prelude to another surprise. I was lucky enough to witness fissures 2 and 3 opening up and I was there as well few hours before fissure 4 started erupting. In each case, the events that anticipated all those fissure openings were pretty much the same. Sharp and shallow earthquakes and a clear change of the eruptive activity at each active vent, be it a sudden drop (before the opening of fissure 2) or a substantial and fast increase (before the opening of fissure 3 and 4). Also this time the plot didn't change. Around 45 minutes before fissure 5 opened, the eruptive activity drastically dropped at each active fissure and we felt at least 2 sharp earthquakes. Me and my german friend decided to stay just a bit more to see if a new fissure was on the way, the questions were mainly two: "where this time?" and "if it's gonna happen, how long we have to wait for it?" Regarding the location, our common guesses were either north of fissure 2 or between fissure 3 and 1, since the gap between those two seemed still enough for a new one. Regarding the time, well, we didn't have to wait too long. Around 5 minutes after we talked, between fissure 3 and 1 a lot of gas and steam started rising from the ground. We were standing not too far and we witnessed the whole process starting and developing. The first vent opened up after few minutes and the fissure gradually moved uphill for 150-200 meters in around 35-40 minutes. At the same time another segment of the new fissure opened up further north, between fissure 3 and 4. Many people called that segment "fissure 6", I will describe it as the northern segment of fissure 5. They opened up at the same time, in the same fissural event. All the clips are put in a chronological order, except the drone ones. The first clips are taken few moments after the first vent opened up. Is clearly visible the steam emissions increasing where the magma is about to break through the surface. The first one and a half minute shows how the fissure developed during the the very first hour. The clips between 01:50 and 02:33 show the actual moment when the magma breaks the rocks and lava appears on the surface. I have this specific moment and the whole sequence actually recorded and I'm planning to make a video about it some time later. Between 03:15 and 03:37 few clips of the northern segment of fissure #5, opened between fissure #3 and #4. The sound is taken with a mic and a recorder placed around 15 meters away from the fissure. No wind, no people talking, no other sounds except the voice of the volcano. This eruption is just a continuous marvel. © Marco Di Marco / Volcano Chaser
