The last rites of Member of Parliament from Shillong Dr Ricky Andrew J Syngkon will be performed on February 21. On February 20 his mortal remains were taken from his mother’s residence at Pohkseh to Nongsder in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya and will be laid to rest at Sumer on Saturday. Earlier on Friday, Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the Business Advisory Committee, with government consent, resolved on Friday to suspend the February 20 session following Syngkon's sudden death. The House convened for an obituary reference before adjourning. Syngkon died on February 19 evening due to a heart attack while playing futsal in the outskirts of Shillong. The 54-year-old was rushed to the Mawiong Community Health Centre (CHC) for medical attention. However, due to the absence of a doctor, he was referred and shifted to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw. According to the hospital, the MP was brought in at 7:40 pm and died at 8:42 pm. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit along with other legislators, political leaders and officials also rushed to the hospital. Before entering politics, Syngkon was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at North-Eastern Hill University.
