In this video we describe a strategy for achieving accessibility compliance based on the principles of the Arizona Management System. The 5S Approach to Improving Accessibility is a methodology adapted from Lean manufacturing for organizing a workplace, which promotes order, cleanliness, and efficiency. The 5S methodology is based on five Japanese words, which are translated as follows, with their accessibility-focused actions: Sort (Seiri): Eliminate unnecessary items, keeping only what is essential for the task at hand. Accessibility Action: Reduce your website footprint by removing content that no longer serves a purpose or is "orphaned". Review your inventory and sitemap to determine what needs to be online, and consider if a document should instead be a web page or form. Set in Order (Seiton): Organize the remaining items for efficiency and easy access, ensuring everything has its place. Accessibility Action: Develop a plan to tackle accessibility issues, such as using the "Find Your Five" method. Create a structured time and process for finding and fixing errors, and work as a team to understand the problem and its fix, improving skill sets one check at a time. Shine (Seiso): Clean the work area and equipment regularly, maintaining a tidy and hygienic environment. Accessibility Action: Find and fix the issues. Use the handbook, online help guides, and other resources to resolve errors. Standardize (Seiketsu): Establish procedures and standards for maintaining the first three S's, ensuring consistency and repeatability. Accessibility Action: Document the process for adding content to your website, including steps to review and resolve accessibility errors at the moment of creation. Create a checklist of common errors. Begin equating remediation with "poor quality" and focus on "first time quality," which always includes accessibility. Sustain (Shitsuke): Develop habits and discipline to maintain the 5S system over time, making it a continuous process of improvement. Accessibility Action: Conduct periodic ongoing reviews of tools like Optimize to keep focus on true errors. Share resources and learn from others. The goal is to "Fix your problems (and the numbers take care of themselves)!"
