My first time seeing Finland's Demilich was when they played Maryland Deathfest 2015, after they officially reunited in 2014, and would stay that course. I went to buy a shirt and they only had two shirts left at both extreme ends of the size spectrum; XS (extra small) or a massive 5XL. I went with the 5XL as a joke but now I have a sick wearable blanket for the summer or a baggy dress/robe for any girl who stays the night. Doubt I'll ever sell that one hahaha. Demilich were perfect that day, but unfortunately it would be the last time I'd see them until June 2022. I had a chance in 2018 when they played Saint Vitus and although I was in attendance, I received a text that shook me to my core, and led to some personally disastrous circumstances. My roommate reached out to let me know they were fending off some feral home invaders and seeking back up asap. I raced over there but it was too late; the police were called by the neighbors, they violently arrested the perpetrators leaving my guitar crashing to the pavement with my other stolen possessions, and I would not get any of that out of evidence for about half a year or more. That's one of the most dire hood dilemmas you can experience, but possessions can be recovered, and thankfully, my roommate was rescued. Afterwards, the massive fall out and resulting challenges were hard to overcome for awhile, but I found it was best to think of the good things before your luck soured, and even better to look forward to everything nice about the life you'll have after your struggle. So I tried to think about getting to see Demilich again, without some horrible circumstances fucking it up. My situation improved but not long after that boom: Covid-19. Thankfully, my friends and family mostly made it through the initial hard times of the lockdown and pandemic, and after overcoming even more bullshit, my chance to see Demilich drew closer though still a bit of a ways off. Finally, the tour had been rescheduled for 2022 after plans for 2020 fell through, I would have a chance to see them on a bill with some incredible bands. It wouldn't fully pan out when I had to rush outside due heatstroke half way through their set, with Vitus' AC units not working properly that night, and the room completely packed out. It was so hot my phone turned off for it's own good and I was only able to get some of their set. I was pretty pissed about all that after waiting since 2018, so I booked a flight to Cleveland to see this same touring line up with Frozen Soul. So look out for that. I know I mostly wrote about my experience, but since there isn't much that hasn't already been said about this legendary band, I figured a short essay on how I saw a glimpse of Demilich on one of the worst days of my life, and finally seeing them again in full under happier circumstances could be an interesting read. Perhaps it does something for you or it helps you think of a way out of your own bag, but one constant I'm reminded of during dark times, is to turn remember you can always turn to music to start healing and clearing your mind. Sounds like some contrived hippy bullshit but I find it rings true. For some @Demilich is the music they find soothing after some hard times. The band has made all their recorded material available for free download, so give thanks and support them by buying their merch and seeing them live when you can. Current and former members Winterwolf, Deathchain, Jess and the Ancient Ones, Darkfeast, Barathrum, Aspiration, and Melcorn.
