There’s no reinforcements due and no turning back; either HAVOC destroys the mothership and saves humanity or the world is doomed. The aliens guarding the vessel are some of the toughest we’ve faced, but are they so alien? The aliens have been saying some worrying things to him since he arrived on board, things that might go a long way to explaining a secret that was not only kept from him, but from us too. Are they lying? It’s hard to tell but it doesn’t matter in the end, as HAVOC unit will continue his mission to the best of his ability. Will the faith A.I Corp has placed in HAVOC unit be justified or will their best hope for the human race ultimately fail to meet up to expectations? We’ll find out soon enough. CyClones was a game that I went into without high expectations, with memories of how fiddly it was to control and getting stuck in it very early on. I’m happy to say that the game has surpassed my expectations in many ways many-fold. Contrary to the memories of my youth, the game controls a lot better then I remember it doing and the additional features CyClones brings to the FPS genre set it out from the other offerings of the time. The enemy AI may be a bit simple but they certainly pose a challenge, sometimes too much of a challenge. The music is catchy and fits well with the aesthetic of the game which is also impressive for the time but most importantly, the game is great fun. It so epitomises the 90s that you can’t help but appreciate the over-the-top sci-fi elements, the absurd weaponry, the wild enemy design and the cheesy FMV cutscenes that make the CD version a rare treat in hammy acting. That’s not to say that the game is without flaws, as it has plenty of them. Some of the solutions to levels requires finding secret doors that aren’t at all obvious and there are a few levels that suddenly spike the difficulty way too high. The game also isn’t that long compared to other games of the genre; if you knew exactly what you were doing, I wouldn’t be surprised if you could breeze through the entire thing in an hour. Additionally, while I said the game did have better controls then I remember, they still have their problems, mainly in the time taken to aim at foes and some shots simply not registering. Still, with all that said, CyClones is an entertaining game that’s unique enough to warrant more attention then it got on release and while I could never see it becoming a franchise had it been more successful, that people don’t appreciate what it does differently and it’s cheesy FMVs is a shame. If you like 90s FPS games and want to play something different, you could do far worse then give this game a look. So what’s to come after CyClones? Whether HAVOC unit survived or not, I think it’s time for another shorter game and one that’s been on the channel before, albeit not as a full let’s play. It’s also a light-hearted and silly game that I’ve never completed before, though there are many games that fit that criteria. Hopefully the next game will give HAVOC unit enough time to reform from his explosive debriefing and think on what he’ll do with his life next. Let’s hope that something isn’t getting his revenge and finishing off what the CyClones started, eh? See you next let’s play!
