The Alpini are the oldest active mountain infantry in the world! Considering Italy's mountainous borders with threats throughout its long history, one can well imagine why. During WWII they were primarily deployed along the Eastern front and in the Balkans, where they'd put their hard-won skills and elite training to the test.
