Anthony Murphy discusses the writing of James Fergusson (1872) about Loughcrew and the excavations that had been carried out there by Meath man Eugene Conwell in the 1860s. While there is considerable value to this account, one of the great tragedies is that so many of the cairns were excavated – and stripped of material – that little has been left for modern archaeologists, who with their improved techniques are much better positioned to allow a full interpretation and dating of that material evidence.
