Do you know that there's an eco-tourism park right here in Metro Manila where you can do birdwatching, trekking, mangrove forest exploration or just simply communing with nature? The Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park or the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area comprises the two islands, Long Island (Las Pinas) and Freedom Island (Paranaque) , artificial islands located in Manila Bay off the coast of Parañaque, Philippines, and t covering a total area of 175 hectares. These island were formed sometime between 1973 and 1985. The island covers an area of approximately 0.32 square km and a height between 0 to 7 meters above sea level. Flora and fauna of the island include swamps, mangrove forests that provide a habitat for some migratory bird species which include the black-crowned night heron, Chinese Egret, Philippine duck, and the common moorhen. In 2007 the Philippine government declared the Freedom Island a Critical Habitat. In 2013 the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area was listed as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. In 2018, it was declared a national protected area. We joined a birdwatching event organized by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines and we were lucky to see many endemic and migratory birds in the islands. We were also able to explore its mangrove forest, bambusetum and its newly established Wetland Center.
