Zhang Qianyi ( b. 1959 ) Zhang Qianyi, of Korean ethnicity, was born in September 1959 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. He is a renowned composer in mainland China and a recipient of the State Council's special government allowance. He has served as the Vice Chairman of the 8th and 9th Councils of the Chinese Musicians' Association. In 1976, Zhang graduated from the Orchestral Department of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, and in 1977, he began working as a composer. In 1984, he graduated from the Composition Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he later pursued a doctoral degree under the mentorship of Professor Yang Liqing. Since making his debut in China's music scene in the early 1980s with his symphonic tone poem Northern Forest, Zhang has composed a vast array of works spanning symphonic music, chamber music, vocal music, opera, dance drama, ballet, film, and television scores, covering diverse themes and genres. On October 2, 2021, the China National Traditional Orchestra premiered the thematic folk music concert The Great Wall at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Conducted by renowned maestro Tang Muhai, the concert featured compositions by acclaimed composers Guo Wenjing, Zhang Qianyi, Hao Weiya, and Wang Danhong. Zhang composed the orchestral piece Beyond and Within the Great Wall for this performance. Northern Forest, for Orchestra (1980/81) Composed between 1980 and 1981, this piece is a single-movement sonata form composition, with each section carrying a descriptive title: Night, Morning Glow, Mountain Song (Ascending), Nature and Animals, Afternoon, Sunset Glow, Sunset Fading in the West, Mountain Song (Descending), and Nightfall. In 1981, it won the First National Symphony Music Composition Award (First-Class Excellence Award, ranked sixth). Through the depiction of a day in the forest, the piece presents a musical landscape painting of the northern forest.
