Timeless Trees 🌳 Evergreen Hedging & Pruning Tips! Grow Your Own Multi-Stem Birch Tree 🌲

Welcome to Andyn Farm. In this week’s gardening vlog, we’re talking all about trimming and shaping trees and hedges, looking at a range of evergreens, and finishing with a practical demonstration of creating multi-stem birch trees through coppicing We start with hedge maintenance, including Portuguese laurel (Prunus lusitanica) and traditional cherry laurel, discussing growth rates, wind tolerance, pruning methods, and how regular trimming can keep even very vigorous plants compact and manageable. These hedges are used as windbreaks and shelter, making them ideal for exposed gardens and protecting areas such as polytunnels. We also look at Lonicera red tips, grown for evergreen structure and colourful new growth, and explain how it can be clipped, shaped, and even used as an alternative to box planting with more frequent maintenance. Finally, we cover English yew, a tough British native that responds beautifully to shaping and regular trimming and is perfect for hedging, screens, and topiary. The video then moves on to birch tree pruning, showing how young birch can be cut back hard while dormant to encourage a strong multi-stem form. By coppicing at the right time, a single tree can be transformed into several trunks growing from the base, creating structure and interest even where space is limited. Gardening is always about learning, trial and error, and adapting to the weather. If something doesn’t work, there’s always another season and another opportunity to try again.
