The event represents a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention. Theme of WSPD 2021, “Creating hope through action,” reflects the need for collective, action to address this urgent public health issue. All of us- family members, friends, co-workers, community members, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, political officials and governments- can take action to prevent suicide in the Region. Objectives : The overall goal of this day is to raise awareness about suicide prevention worldwide. Objectives include promoting stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self-harm and suicide through preventative action. These can be achieved through capacity building of healthcare providers and other relevant actors, positive and informative messaging aimed at the general population and at-risk groups such as young people, and facilitating open discussion on mental health at home, at school, in the workplace, etc. Those contemplating or affected by suicide are also encouraged to share their stories and seek professional help. Myth : Young people who talk about suicide never attempt to take or actually take their own lives. They are just seeking attention. Fact: Anyone talking about suicide should always be taken seriously. Myth: Once a person is intent on suicide, there is no way to stop them. They will be suicidal forever. Fact: Suicide can be prevented. If they receive the help they seek, they are less likely to attempt suicide. Myth: Suicidal thoughts and behaviours are hereditary. Fact: While suicidal thoughts and behaviours tend to run in families, they are not hereditary. It is important for people experiencing suicidal thoughts to know that there are options other than ending their life. Myth: All suicidal young people are depressed. Fact: While depressed mood is common, this is not true for everyone who suicides. Myth: A marked and sudden improvement in mental state following a crisis indicates the suicide risk is over. Fact: When there have been signs of a possible suicide attempt, a sudden improvement in mood may in fact indicate that the person has finally decided to take their own life. ________________________________________________________________________ About Dr. Purnendu Roy : Dr. Purnendu Roy excelled in MBBS and MS (Surgery) from JIPMER, Puducherry and received his FRCS degree from England in 1987. He worked as a Senior House Officer in William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent (England) and joined Surgical Rotation Training in South Cleveland Hospital. After the completion of FRCS, he worked as the surgical registrar in Scarborough General Hospital, Yorkshire. After his return from England in 1992, he initiated his career at Kothari Hospital, Kolkata and served for three years. In 1995, he joined Duncan Clinic which later became Apollo Gleneagles Hospital and Clinic. He also practiced at Anandalok, a charitable hospital where he treated patients free of cost and did a high volume of laparoscopic surgeries at an economical rate up to 51 surgeries per day.
