#house #architecture #housedesign The hum of the city faded into a soft thrum as you approached the outskirts of Sondrio, Italy. Here, the urban sprawl gave way to something wilder, something rooted in the earth. This was a land of gradients, where the sprawling plains ascended into the jagged peaks of the Alps. Tucked into this majestic landscape was a plot of land that seemed to have its own story to tell. For years, it had been a place of respite, a green haven where employees of a local electric company would gather. Its playgrounds, once filled with the echoes of laughter, now stood quiet, waiting for a new purpose. This quiet potential was what captivated the eye of a client with a vision. They saw a home, a multi-story edifice that would rise from this very earth, a testament to modern living. Yet, when the project was placed in the hands of Damilano Studio Architects, the narrative began to shift. The studio's lead, Duilio Damilano, was no stranger to the language of form and material. Born in Cuneo, with a family background steeped in the art of sculpture, he possessed a unique sensitivity to how an object—be it a stone carving or a building—interacts with its surroundings. He saw more than just a plot of land; he saw a conversation waiting to happen between a building and its environment. The conversation that Duilio envisioned was not one of dominance, but of dialogue. The initial idea of a multi-story villa seemed to him like an imposition on the landscape, a structure that would stand apart from the world it was meant to inhabit. He proposed an alternative, a design that would embrace the low-slung beauty of the terrain. The concept of a single-story home was born from this philosophy, a dwelling that would hug the ground, opening its metaphorical eyes not to the sky, but to the breathtaking expanse of the surrounding landscape. This change in perspective was a stroke of genius. A one-story villa wouldn't just be a place to live; it would be a vantage point. The private park and the celebrated Valtellina vineyards would become a part of the daily experience, framed by the very windows of the home. The design was an invitation to live in harmony with the land, to feel the rhythm of the seasons and the pulse of the earth.
