The centre-right populist party, ‘The Movement of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities,’ managed a strong victory in the Slovakia’s recent parliamentary election, continuing a trend of conservative triumphs of late around the world. Held on February 29, the party led by millionaire Igor Matovič scored a dominant win over the ruling left-wing populist Social Democrats (Smer) Party which has dominated the political landscape in Slovakia for over a decade. Six parties entered the presidential race, with the OLaNO party scoring 25 per cent of the votes, more than doubling its result from the election four years ago. The ruling Smer party came in second with 18.3 per cent of the votes. Upon claiming victory, Mr Matovič said Slovakia has “woken up". The result comes amid other surprising election results in Europe, which have seen conservative governments win power in a number of nations such as the Czech Republic and Austria. Donald Trump’s victory in the United States over Hillary Clinton and Scott Morrison’s election victory in Australia also demonstrate unexpected conservative wins of late. Image: AP
