Protests break out in Romania demanding cancelled presidential election to go ahead | N18G

Tens of thousands of Romanians protested in Bucharest on January 12, demanding that the cancelled presidential election be reinstated and calling for the resignation of outgoing President Klaus Iohannis. The election was annulled by Romania’s top court on December 6, two days before the second round, after evidence emerged that frontrunner Calin Georgescu had benefitted from an unfair social media campaign likely linked to Russia. Russia denied involvement. The court ruled for a full re-run of the election, but the Romanian government has yet to finalize a schedule. However, party leaders have tentatively agreed to hold the two rounds on May 4 and May 18. There is uncertainty about whether Georgescu, who opposes Romanian support for Ukraine in the Russian invasion, will be allowed to run again.
