Welcome to Dunbar, a quiet city along the Kanawha River in West Virginia that blends fascinating history with scenic beauty. Once part of a large land grant surveyed by George Washington, Dunbar has grown from farming roots into a family-friendly town with deep historical ties to innovation and industry. This virtual walking tour takes you through some of Dunbar’s standout locations. We begin at Shawnee Park, home to the historic Dunbar Mound, one of the few surviving burial mounds built by the Hopewell culture nearly 2,000 years ago. This ancient site speaks to the region's deep Indigenous history and archaeological importance. Next, we stop by Wine Cellar Park, where the 19th-century Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars still stand. These stone vaults were used to store wine in the 1850s and are now a beloved piece of local heritage and a great picnic spot for visitors and residents alike. Along our route, we also explore Dunbar City Park and the Recreation Center, where families gather for sports, playground fun, splash pads, and community events throughout the year. From cozy neighborhoods to friendly streets, Dunbar offers a peaceful small-town experience within the Charleston metro area. 🌟 Fun Facts: Dunbar may have been named after either Mary Dunbar, a descendant of George Washington, or local banker Dunbar Baines. The Gravely Plow, a revolutionary tractor for small-scale farming, was invented here in 1916. Dunbar once housed more than 10 Native American mounds, making it one of the most mound-rich areas in the Kanawha Valley. Whether you love Appalachian history, beautiful parks, or a quiet riverside atmosphere, Dunbar is a hidden gem worth exploring. #DunbarWV #ShawneePark #DutchHollow #WineCellarPark #DunbarMound #GravelyPlow #KanawhaValley #VirtualWalkingTour #TrekkerTours #AppalachianHistory #SmallTownCharm
