Contact grafting, also known as approach grafting, is a special grafting technique where the scion (top part) and rootstock (bottom part) are joined while both are still attached to their original plants, allowing their tissues to fuse before being separated, often used for delicate plants or repairing damaged trees. Unlike regular grafting where one plant is fully removed, here you join two living plants, often in situ (in place), and gradually sever the parts below the graft union and above the graft union once they've formed a strong connection, ensuring continuous nutrient flow. How it works (Approach Grafting) Select Plants: Choose a scion plant and a rootstock plant that are close enough to touch and have compatible tissues. Prepare Cuts: Make matching cuts (slits or notches) on both the scion and the rootstock where they will meet. Join: Fit the cut surfaces together so the cambium layers (the growing tissue) align perfectly. Secure: Wrap the union tightly with grafting tape or plastic to hold them in place and keep moisture in. Wait: Allow time for the tissues to fuse and form a strong graft union, which can take weeks or months. Separate: Once joined, gradually cut the base of the scion from its original plant and the top of the rootstock from its own roots, leaving the grafted plant to grow. Uses Repair: Healing injured trees by bridging damaged sections of bark. Delicate Plants: Propagating plants that are difficult to graft using other methods. In-Place Grafting: Grafting a desired variety onto a rootstock already growing in the ground. Key Difference Standard Grafting: Scion cut, then attached to a detached rootstock. Contact/Approach Grafting: Both parts remain rooted until the graft takes. Contact Grafting on mango plant, Mango grafting, Maidul's gardening Techniques, please Subscribe my channel 🙏
