‘Don’ Let Us Get Sick’ written by Warren Zevon a masterful songwriter who wrote funny and sardonic songs and performed in this transcription by Jackson Browne (in the Covid years) is a remarkable song about sorrow and redemption. A song for the ages as it could have been composed many years ago as a lament for the plague of London in the mid1600’s as it has a very traditional English feel portraying one man’s woes and hopes for the future or for the Spanish Flu that killed over 50 million souls around the world in 1918/19 or for our own tragic time recently with Covid. Jackson does a sterling job with lots of feeling and playing solo electric guitar with chorus/delay which helps the individual notes ring out and sustain. It will still be a good tune to play on an acoustic guitar and to learn such an arrangement. Insights: The song is in 6/8 time in Eb in standard tuning with the capo at the 3rd fret. The chords are finger picked and the arrangement has a more of a piano style with simple chords (sometimes only two notes (diads) that have moving bass lines and a very open sound. A lot of the chords have the bottom note named as a slash chord i.e. B/G (the parent chord is G and the lowest note is the 3rd of the chord B on the 2nd fret 5th string), same with E/C (the parent chord is C but with the 3rd of the chord E on the 2nd fret 4th string) and so on. Some notes are very lightly played almost inaudible at times to give the performance light and shade and the guitar breaks are played louder– dynamics. Enjoy.
