5” gauge NSW railways 18 class in the guise of Thomas the Tank Engine on acceptance steam trials. Thomas has given a bit of trouble on previous trials, I thought it was valve timing, it turned out to be gasket material blocking the steam ports and one end of the cylinder block on the back covers. This was dealt with as well as milling out the inlets more generously to allow steam to get in and out more easily to the cylinder bore. The difference is astounding, now the beats can be evenly heard and the locomotive can be notched up. Steaming is excellent and the stainless steel radiant superheaters are obviously doing their job. It just goes to show even after building several engines it doesn’t pay to get complacent! Something as simple as not having adequate porting into the cylinder bore can be a show stopper even if everything else is right. I am very pleased with how the little blue engine goes now.
