Claude-Emma Debussy (1905-1919), affectionately known as "Chouchou", was the only daughter of the renowned French composer Claude Debussy and Emma Bardac. The charming child, an accomplished pianist and singer, was a great source of joy and musical inspiration to her father. Debussy said were it not for Chouchou he might have committed suicide. He dedicated his "Children's Corner" suite to her in 1908. Sadly, she outlived him by scarcely a year, succumbing to the diphtheria epidemic of 1919. Pianist Roy Howat mused that it makes one wonder if she was brought into the world to inspire her father, and once he was gone, like the sprite Ondine, she vanished into the realm of the supernatural.
