The Monastery of Sant'Elia Vecchio sits in the mountains not far from the town of Curinga in Catanzaro. It was founded by Basilian monks and is said to date back to the early 1000s. Across the street, you'll find a lovely path into the woods which will take you to the majestic Platano Gigante di Curinga. This magnificent tree won the title of Italian Tree of the Year (2020) and came in second place for European Tree of the Year (2021).
