LEEDS PARISH #33: HAREWOOD So this is Harewood, the one parish of Leeds I’ve been really anxious about covering. There’s a whole heap of interesting things about this place, but a lot of them we can’t see That’s because the vast Harewood estate is off limits mostly to the public, and even though there are footpaths, including the White Rose Way and Leeds Country Way here, they’re not helpful Lets set the scene. Harewood itself is a relatively small village located on the A61 between Leeds and Harrogate. Harewood House – a massive mansion - lies to the West of it Harewood is first mentioned in the 10th century Rushworth Gospels manuscript, predating the Domesday Book. It was recorded in the form “æt Harawuda” literally meaning “at Harewood” Its meaning is simple – Harewood literally means “wood characterised by hares”, deriving from the Old English word “hara” which means “hare” – and yes by hare I’m meaning the fluffy bunny sort As well as Harewood House, this the location of a motorsport hillclimb, there’s a ruined castle, and the exterior set for the major TV soap is located within the Harewood estate Harewood parish also covers both the village of Wike and a suburb of Leeds called Wigton Moor, which in itself could make an interesting video.
