What are Crooked Toes? Crooked toes are a common foot problem that affect almost all shoe-wearing people to at least some degree. Possible types of crooked toes include hammertoe, claw toe, mallet toe, adductovarus toe, overlapping toe, and curly toe. In many cases, the abnormal toe shape is not permanent, and the crooked toe may be corrected using natural, non-invasive methods. This is particularly true of people who can still fully straighten and realign their crooked toes manually. Signs and Symptoms of Crooked Toes Some of the most common signs and symptoms associated with crooked toes, besides the crooked toe itself, include open sores, inflammation and redness, a burning sensation in the affected toe, toe pain or irritation when wearing shoes, and a thickening of the skin between the toes, on the ball of the foot, or elsewhere. Possible Causes of Crooked Toes Inappropriate footwear is one of the leading causes of crooked toes. Shoes that include heel elevation, rigid soles, tapering toe boxes, and toe spring force the toes into an unnatural configuration and encourage muscle and tendon imbalances in the foot and lower leg. In some cases, crooked toes may be associated with past foot trauma. How to Straighten and Prevent Crooked Toes, Curved Toes and Bent Toes A toe spacing product, such as Correct Toes, is a powerful tool that can be worn inside men’s and women’s foot-healthy footwear, over toe socks, or on bare feet to help realign the toes in their correct anatomical position. Correct Toes toe spacers also encourage the individual toes to start straightening out, and, when used in combination with a metatarsal pad, such as Pedag metatarsal pads or Strutz foot pads, these toe spacers promote proper body weight distribution across the entire forefoot, including all the toes. Getting the toes straightened and spread back out—to the position that nature intended—is fundamental in addressing and preventing all types of crooked toes. Another important strategy in dealing with crooked toes is to use flat, flexible, and wide toe box shoes that allow the foot to function like a healthy barefoot inside the shoe. Conventional shoes, including most athletic shoes, have a cushioned and built-up outsole, a narrow, pointy toe box, and an uneven surface for the foot to act upon, and they will hasten the progression of a crooked toe, due to their design. Toe socks are another helpful item that can help straighten crooked toes and rehabilitate the foot. Toe socks separate the toes and encourage proper balance, stability, posture, and toe dexterity. Performing key foot and toe exercises is also important for straightening crooked toes. The toe extensor stretch and the hammertoe stretch are two of the most helpful exercises in achieving this goal. Those who experience any of the previously mentioned crooked toe syndromes should consider visiting a natural foot care provider or other appropriate foot care professional to receive a personalized treatment plan.
