In this video we’ll write the structural formula for 1-Butene (also called But-1-ene). 1-Butene is a hydrocarbon consisting of Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H) atoms. The molecular formula is C4H8. Since the name ends in -ene we know that we have an Alkene. Because we have the prefix “but” their will be four Carbon atoms in the longest chain. We start by numbering the Carbon atoms in the 1-Butene molecule. The 1 in front of 1-Butene means that there will be a double bond on the first Carbon atom in the 1-Hexene molecule, and it will be between Carbon 1 and 2. We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand This is the skeletal formula for 1-Butene. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
