In response to a question about elevated triglycerides during intermittent fasting and while on a low-carb diet, Dr. Ben Bikman explains that triglycerides are carried by lipoproteins like VLDL and LDL from the liver. One possible reason for increased triglycerides, even on a low-carb diet, is active weight loss. During weight loss, the liver produces more triglycerides to supply fat as fuel to the muscles, which is a known and expected phenomenon referred to as “transient hypercholesterolemia of weight loss.” This rise in triglycerides is not a concern, as it typically continues until weight loss stabilizes.
