GET BEHIND THE LENS WITH STILLS BY TOM Reinvention is central to an artist’s work and Thomas Mokgosi has seen his share – moving from rural Limpopo to study in Tshwane, studying I.T. only to choose photography. But his readiness to change has paid off. Thomas Mokgosi has always had a passion for graphics from tertiary education. He worked on websites, flyers, posters and a little bit of photography before choosing photography as a full time career. “What qualifies a good image is in the way that you take it so you need to really understand lighting. When anybody asks you what is the definition of photography, it’s basically painting with lighting.” Tom took the leap to buy a house that would be big enough to obtain the photography studio of his dreams. Containing various rooms to shoot in and being a comfortable living space, Tom has optimized his craft. His three bedroom house with two lounges and his lounge converted to studio is perfect for his visions to come to life and allows him to be a more focused photographer. “Speaking of all of the different spaces in the house, this lounge has to be my absolutely favourite. I like it because it gives me the opportunity to get away from work while still working, unwind, play some games, have a drink and think of fresher ideas. ” Racking up a list of A-list clients, Tom has high expectations to meet and only delivers the best. DJ Zinhle met Tom at a club when he was still an up and coming photographer and have now known each other for a decade. “He’s reliable, he understands the trends, understands what’s new in photography so that’s what makes him popular,” says DJ Zinhle.
