Stonehenge is built as several concentric circles and horseshoes: an outer earthwork circle, an outer stone circle, and inner stone settings. The famous outer “sarsen circle” was originally 30 large upright stones, linked by 30 horizontal lintels to make a near‑continuous ring. Inside this is a horseshoe of five massive sarsen trilithons (two uprights with a lintel on top), open towards the north‑east entrance. No one knows the exact purpose of Stonehenge; leading ideas include a ceremonial temple, a place of burial, a healing site, or an ancient astronomical observatory.
