Cerebral Endoscopy has become widely accepted within the neurosurgical field, proving to be a multifaceted tool whose potential has yet to be fully realized. Cerebral Endoscopy involves navigation through the ventricular system, subarachnoid space, and parenchyma for inspection or treatment of neuropathologic disease; it is used either as an independent device or in conjunction with microneurosurgery. It permits effective therapy within the depth of the brain with minimal disruption of eloquent neural tissue. The origins of ventricular cerebral Endoscopy date back to 1910 when Lespinasse, a urologist in Chicago, placed a rigid Kelly cystoscope within the ventricular system to coagulate the choroid plexus in two patients with hydrocephalus. Cerebral Endoscopy permits inspection of the ventricular system, tumor biopsy and resection, intraventricular cyst fenestration or resection, irrigation and removal of hemorrhage, and treatment of hydrocephalus. Professor Waleed Abdelfattah Azab is giving “Cerebral Endoscopy” lecture, don’t miss it!
