5MV-49 - Flat Mount and 180mm discs: yes you can! -------------------------------------- Although I recognize that fully hydraulic disc brakes are very powerful, my experience with them is that the force applied to the brake lever is very low and this means that I cannot get the 'feel' from the brakes that I want. I use mechanically actuated disc brakes with requires a larger force on the brake lever which in turn allows me to modulate the brake force better. In addition to (1) the the better feel, there are other advantages, (2) I can use my preferred lower cost 9-speed brake levers and (3) the whole package is more maintainable at home and out on the road. As the mechanical disc brakes are less powerful, using a larger diameter disc will give an advantage so I like to use a 180mm diameter front disc (140mm on the rear is just fine). However many bike (frames) these days have the Shimano 'flat mount' (FM) mounts for the brakes. These were designed for either 140mm or 160mm discs but no larger. In theory it is possible to use 180mm disc the caliper just needs to be re-positioned. To reposition the caliper a mount adapter is needed. It is possible to get FL to Post Mount adapters but I wanted a FM to FM adapter to suit my brake calipers. I searched for such an adapter but could not find anything suitable so I decided to design and make my own. I started by searching for the FM standard specification; on doing so Google served me an advert for such an adapter which had only just come on the market. I bought one. The adapter manufacture website can be found here: https://www.xlc-parts.com/en/road/bik... I purchased my adapter frome here: https://www.bikeinn.com/bike/xlc-x107... (postage was quite expensive) I have no connection with either organisation. As I am experimenting with mechanically actuated hydraulic discs calipers, I think I will initially start with the 160mm diameter disc on the front (140mm on the rear). My expectation is that type of brake caliper will be more powerful than fully mechanical calipers but retain the a better braking feel for better control. If this turns out not to be the case, I have the 180mm disc as an option. ======================== About the 5MV channel -------------------------------------- My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will last no longer than five minutes, many will be much shorter. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime. I am new to posting videos on YouTube (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload. There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-). ==================== My strava profile can be found here: / strava Cambridge Cycling Club website: http://www.cambridge-cycling-club.org...
