Alessandro Zarrelli was an Italian amateur footballer with a dream he couldn't achieve through talent alone. So he came up with a plan: send fake faxes to professional clubs across Britain, pretending to be an Italian Football Federation executive offering a promising young prospect on loan. That prospect was himself. In 2005, Zarrelli fooled Lisburn Distillery in Northern Ireland into signing him. When his lack of ability became obvious, he moved on to Wales, targeting Bangor City and Connah's Quay Nomads with the same scheme. Managers quickly realized something was wrong. Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers confirmed they had never heard of him. The Italian Football Federation had no record of his existence. His deception was exposed in the 2006 Sky TV documentary "Super Fakes," where producers traced his fake faxes to a shop near his parents' house in Italy and confronted him in a sting operation. Caught on camera, Zarrelli admitted everything—then called the producers to sarcastically thank them for making him famous. But the story didn't end there. Against all odds, Zarrelli rebuilt his career in lower-league British football, playing for clubs like Queen's Park, Northwich Victoria, and St Cuthbert Wanderers, where he helped win a league treble. Managers gave him second chances, judging him on ability rather than his past. Zarrelli died in a car accident in November 2018 at age 34. His story remains one of football's strangest tales—a faker who eventually found redemption through the game he loved.
