Italian soldiers cooking food on the barbeque STORYLINE NATO soldiers of various nationalities who are serving in Afghanistan began Christmas celebrations in Kabul on Monday with special dinners, Christmas mass and other festivities. Camp Warehouse in Kabul is one of the main NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) military bases where multi-national soldiers are serving with ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) under NATO command. The celebrations began on Christmas eve with German soldiers holding a Christmas mass followed by the airing of a special Christmas radio programme out of Afghanistan. Stephan Voges, a German soldier who ran the radio show said he found it "very hard" to be away from family over Christmas. "But it is also nice to spend Christmas with my comrades. It is also good to send messages to our loved ones back home to wish them a Merry Christmas," he said. French soldiers had a special Christmas meal together, handed out gifts and dressed in Christmas costumes. "It's part of the choice I made in signing up for the army, you have to spend Christmas abroad, so it's not a problem," Gpou Vqlentin, a French soldier, told AP Television. The Italian forces also gathered on Christmas eve for an Italian style Christmas meal as well as barbeque. One Italian soldier, who gave his name as Aldoita said he was looking forward to spending Christmas with his family next year and possibly travelling away with them. "We shall see because the one who decides in my house is always my wife," he added wryly. German troops are mainly responsible for security in the north. French soldiers serve principally in Kabul as well as parts of the southern province of Kandahar. Italian forces are responsible for the western province of Herat.
