Are you coming off quarantine and wondering where to visit? Roosevelt Islands in New York City will give you a vacation feeling right in the middle of Manhattan. Nestled between the Long Island City, Queens, waterfront and the east side of Manhattan, Roosevelt Island is very much a hidden gem of New York City. At just two miles long and one street wide, the destination is often overlooked even by locals. If you ask most New Yorkers to find it on a map, chances are they won't be able to spot it. But the Roosevelt Island Tramway and the island's stunning views of the Manhattan skyline are well-known on Instagram. This is a narrow island which is on the East River located directly on the famous Queensboro Bridge. You can do a lot while on this Island, starting from riding the renowned tram to visiting the remains of the historical Smallpox Hospital on the Island. Here is what to do when visiting this hidden New York gem. Roosevelt Island Tram The Roosevelt Island Tramway provides the most modern aerial tramway in the world, running every 7-15 minutes from 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan to Tramway Plaza on Roosevelt Island. Please note that the passengers must exit the tram at each stop (either Manhattan bound or Roosevelt Island bound) and pay again to return to the other side. Hours of Operation Sunday through Thursday: 6 AM - 2 AM Friday and Saturday: 6 AM - 3:30 AM Morning Rush Hours (Monday through Friday): 7 AM - 10 AM Evening Rush Hours (Monday through Friday): 3 PM - 8 PM Holidays: Tram runs on a regular schedule, except for major holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day), during which the Tram runs on a rush hour schedule. The Graduate Hotel: the best – and only – hotel around. The island's sole hotel, the Graduate pays tribute to the rich history of its surroundings, with a hallway on the first floor dedicated to photographs of the Roosevelt family and a copy of FDR's famous "Four Freedoms Speech" in every guest room. A nod to its location at the center of Cornell Tech (more on that later), the first-floor lobby and adjoining area are lined with more than 10,000 textbooks, all of which were donated from the school. Just off the lobby is the island's newest restaurant, Anything At All, which takes a farm-first approach to contemporary comfort food. (Its name is a reference to a line in The Great Gatsby, for all you bibliophiles.) Topping it all off, quite literally, is the Panorama Room, a rooftop bar offering stunning views of Manhattan, Queens and beyond.
