In this video, we work through the analysis of a statically determinate beam that has multiple internal hinges. In this example, you’ll learn how to use the internal hinges to break up the structure into sub-structures in order to calculate the reactions. We’ll introduce the technique of ‘tracing the loads across the structure’ in order to rapidly draw the complete shear force diagram. Then, you’ll learn how you can use the shear force diagram as a guide to sketch out the qualitative bending moment diagram. Finally, we’ll make discrete cuts in the beam to identify the remaining unknown bending moments and complete the full bending moment diagram.
