This video demonstrates a vitrectomy and laser being performed for a patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and a traction retinal detachment. In this video, I have already placed the three, standard cannulas into the eye, and have in one hand a light pipe, and a vitrector in the other. The light pipe illuminates the inside of the eye (like a flashlight in a murky river), and the vitrector bites up the vitreous in tiny pieces, and removes it from the eye. These procedures are usually done with the patient awake, with mild sedation; the eye is anesthetozed with local anesthetic.
