After a hiatus, we're returning to this series on the Hamblen Collection, which is a homemade manuscript of old fiddle tunes as played by Virginia musician David Russell Hamblen (1809-1895) and his son Williamson (1846-1920), arranged and copied by A. Porter Hamblen (b. 1875) who was the grandson of David. "Forked Ear" (as it is written in the manuscript) comes from Williamson's repertoire. This almost certainly is a version of the ubiquitous Forked Deer, given the similarity in tune name, but while the high/fine part aligns, the coarse/low part is unique and does not contain the notes to support the distinctive dramatic V chord that one always hears in the various modern Forked Deer versions. (Note that in the manuscript, the low and high parts are actually reversed in order, which I had forgotten after assimilating the tune). Anyway, a lovely little tune.
