The travel industry has been keen to experiment with AI, but progression from pilots to successfully-scaled projects has been slow. In an exclusive interview, Emily Weiss and Tyson Wipperling from Accenture Travel shared their insight on how the aviation industry can accelerate their tech journeys. "To move from pilot to scale, we believe strongly that there needs to be commitment and focus at the very top." Polling from Accenture finds that less than half of airline executives believe AI is central to their strategy. These numbers are far lower than those found among executives in other related industries, such as retail. In fact, Wipperling believes that aviation has been too focused on using AI to improve efficiency, when they could unlock greater growth through AI-powered retail. "With the new Offer-Order capabilities, you can create new packages, new products, new prices. There's a lot more power around signal interpretation as well. So we think that's the biggest area that airlines especially can become more relevant to their consumers going forward." Getting the strategy right at the top is no easy feat: aviation needs to balance the fast-moving market against the maturity of their organisation and the demands of regulators. But Weiss and Wipperling also stress the importance of company-wide upskilling initiatives so that all employees are AI-ready. "The structure for AI adoption has to come from the top, but the ideas and business value are actually going to come bottom-up. Because it's those day-to-day problems and those use cases that not only create opportunities for efficiency, but also improve the customer experience, revenue growth, and profitability." 🎥 Watch the interview to hear Accenture Travel's full thoughts on successfully scaling AI.
