Dr. Hepner is also a political and legal anthropologist with a regional focus on Northeastern Africa and the Great Lakes Region in Eastern Africa, and has research interests in migration and displacement, transnationalism, human rights, transitional justice, militarism, and conflict and peace resolution. She has conducted research in the Horn of Africa with refugees and asylum seekers from Eritrea in North America, Europe, and Africa for over twenty years. She has published four books, which include Emergent Eritrean Human Rights Movements: Politics, Law, and Culture in Transnational Perspective, Religion, Repression, and Human Rights in Eritrea and the Diaspora, and Generation Asylum and Generation Nationalism: Eritrean Migrants, the Global Diaspora, and the Transnational Nation-State.
