In the capital, Dhaka, crowds of people took part in a procession organized by a prominent art college on the Dhaka University campus to welcome the Bengali year 1430. Meanwhile, others enjoyed a musical event in Ramna Park, a historic place in downtown Dhaka. The Bengali calendar emerged under the 16th-century Mughal emperor Akbar by combining Islamic and solar Hindu calendars to facilitate land tax collection. “We want to start a new year beautifully with truly good wishes,” said Shithi Salma Khan, a businesswoman who was taking part in a procession in Dhaka. “There is division in other festivals. But there is no division in this festival. Everybody is equal here because we are all Bengali,” she added. Friday’s processions were heavily guarded by security.
