SOUNDBITE (English) Claire Van Der Westhuizen, shooting instructor: ++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED BY SHOT 12++ "Shoot is one thing, but what we teach builds confidence, and it builds sort of that feeling like 'I'm willing to defend myself. I'm somebody that deserves to be defended'. And I think that is, for me, the biggest message that we can bring across is teaching a woman that she is worth it.” 12. Women practicing prone shooting 13. Various of women looking at target boards STORYLINE: At the command of a female instructor, women and girls aged 13 to 65 fire five rounds of bullets at a target a few meters away at an outdoor shooting range in Bronkhorstspruit, a small agricultural and commuter town on the outskirts of Pretoria, the capital of South Africa. Like many women across the country, they are actively acquiring self-defense skills in an effort to feel safer due to the country’s exceptionally high rates of violence, especially violence against women. “Check your grip, check your line of sight,” shouts Claire Van Der Westhuisen, the lead female teacher of Lone Operator shooting range, as the women quickly reload their 9mm guns for another round. They practice a range of real-world scenarios, such as firing their pistols while lying flat on the ground. Ranging from violent contact crimes to property-related crimes, women have found themselves endangered by perpetrators - known and unknown - even in their own homes. Surviving a home invasion where five men forcefully entered her house, tied her up and ransacked her home, pushed working grandmother Sunnette Du Toit to pick up firearm training. Advocacy groups say the most vulnerable to crime are women and children.
