Measuring the length of a curve is crucial in industrial design. When you create a NURBS surface from curves in Maya and want to hand it over to a CNC or 3D print facility, you need to know the dimensions of your surface. And in industrial design dimensions start with curves. I think there are 3rd party plugins which measure curves of all shapes. My approach deals with the tools built into Maya. It starts with a straight curve which, while deforming it, keeps its length.
