THE LAY OF MORIA'S DARKNESS | Epic Tolkien-Inspired Song | Moria Sequence from The Lord of the Rings An epic ballad chronicling the Fellowship's harrowing passage through the Mines of Moria—from the desperate battle in the Chamber of Mazarbul, through Gandalf's confrontation with the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, to the Grey Pilgrim's fall and the Company's sorrowful victory. Lyrics: The Fall of the Grey Pilgrim I. The Chamber of Mazarbul In Balin's tomb where dwarves lie slain, The drum-beats echoed doom again— Doom, doom rolled through the hollow dark, While orcs came forth like fire's spark. The Nine stood fast by pillar'd stone, Where Durin's folk once carved their throne. With Sting and Glamdring gleaming bright, And Andúril, the Flame of Night. The goblin-host came pouring through, With scimitar and arrow flew, But Aragorn with sword held high, Made many a shrieking warrior die. The cave-troll came with hide like mail, His club could make the bravest quail, But Frodo thrust with mithril-coat, And saved himself from death's dark moat. II. The Bridge of Khazad-dûm They fled down stairs both steep and long, While behind them rose the orcish song, To Durin's Bridge, that slender span Across the gulf where fires ran. Then Gandalf turned, his staff held fast: "You cannot pass! This is the last— I am servant of the Secret Fire, The flame of Anor I require!" From out the shadow came the Doom, The Balrog wreathed in fire and gloom, With whip of flame and sword of dread, A demon from the ages dead. The bridge it cracked, the stone gave way, The enemy fell to darkness' sway— But ere he plunged to fiery deep, His thong lashed out in vengeance steep. III. The Grey Pilgrim Falls The wizard grasped the broken stone, In that dread moment, all alone— "Fly, you fools!" his last command, Then darkness took him from their hand. Into the abyss deep and vast, Both foe and friend together passed, While flame and shadow warred as one, Far from the light of moon or sun. IV. Victory in Sorrow They stumbled forth to mountain-air, With grief too great for tongues to bear, The quest lived on, but joy had fled— Their guide, their hope, was with the dead. Nine became Eight upon that day, When Mithrandir was torn away, Yet still they pressed toward the goal, Though sorrow weighed on every soul. From Moria's gate in morning's gleam, They wept beside the silver stream, For though they 'scaped the shadow's snare, The light of Gandalf was not there. Victory bitter, triumph cold, The Grey gave way, as tales foretold, But in the darkness, deeds were done, And still the quest must carry on.
