Connect with Rolen on Facebook and share your passion for this ancient instrument: http://on.fb.me/qYRFPk "Crack the Sky" from the forthcoming album BLOOD MEMORY. Written and performed by Rolen Stout. Video by Rolen Stout. The flute I played on the recording is aspen in the key of G, made by J.P. Gomez of Heartsong Flutes in Sedona, Arizona ABOUT THE SONG In "Crack the Sky" I tried to relate something of the terror and consolation of storms, and of the shaman's mysterious work, which often frightens before it heals. Racing arpeggios emulate jagged lightning flashes, while lingering fundamental notes suggest the soothing lull as thunder rolls and decays in the distance. I had in mind shamans from many world cultures while writing and playing this one, including shamans from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the West, which you'll see reflected in the video (the shaman masks in particular). My instrument is Native American style flute, but the sentiment I'm expressing transcends any one culture or philosophy. The Native American flute, as R. Carlos Nakai is always quick to point out, was a social instrument, not a ceremonial one, so the idea is presented here in that same spirit. MUSICAL INSPIRATION Not that they'll read this, but I'll put it out into the universe anyway. I'd like to thank several players of the Native American flute for their endless inspiration, especially Mary Youngblood, R. Carlos Nakai, Kelvin Mockingbird, Robert Mirabal (Johnny Whitehorse), Scott August, Mark Holland (Autumn's Child), Suzanne Teng, Cornell Kinderknecht, Nawang Khechog, Joseph FireCrow, and Kevin Reams. And a special thanks to the YouTube native flute community, particularly Bruce Allen Ray -- a.k.a. "piriajeoshi" -- for the countless hours of inspiration, entertainment, and instruction! IMAGES The images in the video are culled from around the web. Some are in the public domain, others come via Flickr, and a few I was unable to identify.
