Russ Finch's pit greenhouse in Alliance, NE - far west Nebraska, near Colorado border. Very cold, windy climate. It had gotten down to ONE DEGREE BELOW ZERO the night before this was videoed. The greenhouse stays no colder than 52 degrees (ground temp at 8 ft deep). Sun rays coming through the clear panels above heat it to about 75 deg on the average winter day. The warmer the temp, while the citrus is blooming, fruiting, the sweeter the fruit. He does very little watering - just goes down the row with a house, taking about 30 minutes, for the whole greenhouse - once a week in the winter, twice a week in the summer. The greenhouse pit is narrower at the bottom than at the top. The left side is stepped, so shorter plants can be set on the steps either in pots or, I suppose, could be grown in containers or directly in the ground. The right side is slanted outward, so the branches of the trees have more room. Tomatoes require a slightly warmer ground temperature, so he runs a PVC pipe, with a 75 watt light in it, in the ground next to the tomato plants' roots and this keeps them warm enough to bloom and fruit.
