Alexander J. O'Neill (Shaku Shingan) is an Assistant Professor at Musashino University (Tokyo). He is also a Shin Buddhist writer and translator who has published various translations of Mahayana sutras from the Chinese along with numerous academic publications. Today we will be discussing the Anjin Ketsujō Shō (AKS, Essence of the Determination of the Settled Mind), a Japanese Pure Land Buddhist text which is influential in the Seizan and Jōdo Shinshū traditions. The Anjin Ketsujō Shō argues that due to the boundless power of Amida's Vow, both Amida's attainment of Buddhahood and our birth in the Pure Land take place within a single, timeless moment. This means that our future birth in Sukhavati and Buddhahood have ultimately already been accomplished and thus no self-powered practice is necessary to attain the non-dual unity of ourselves and the Buddha. When we recite the nembutsu, we are merely expressing this non-dual truth and waking up to the liberation already granted to us by the Buddha's power. Since we are already one with the Buddha, any attempt at "attaining" Buddhahood through our own efforts is pointless. All that must be done is to place our absolute trust in Amitabha Buddha. 01:44 - Introducing the AKS 08:57 Shōkū and Rennyo 18:02 Title of the Anjin Ketsujō Shō 23:11 Faith as Non-retrogression 27:46 Amitabha Buddha's Original Vow (hongan) 42:56 Why have we not already been awakened by Amida's power? 56:24 How do we connect to Amida's Other power (tariki)? 1:06:12 Dharmakara bodhisattva 1:14:34 Nembutsu and the Non-duality of beings and the Buddha 1:20:07 Inseparability of The Name and the Buddha 1:26:59 Understanding 1:31:58 Nembutsu without calculation (hakarai) 1:42:21 How to recite nembutsu 1:47:47 Nembutsu samadhi 1:51:28 Exclusive nembutsu 2:00:07 Why is Buddhahood only attained in the Pure Land 2:10:07 Shame and Conscience 2:15:04 AKS and Shinran Alexander's translation at Dharmakaya books: https://www.dharmakayabooks.org/publi...
