(4 Dec 1998) Spanish/Nat Pro-Pinochet marchers were heckled by watching crowds on Friday after demonstrating in the Chilean capital. The protestors were escorted from the scene by police, triggering claims of police bias in favour of the right wingers. The demonstration took place in Santiago in front of the country's presidential palace. Holding Chilean flags and with tape covering their mouths, a group of pro-Pinochet Democratic Independent Union (U-D-I) members marched in a circle in front of Chile's presidential palace. They were joined by another group of older women also demonstrating in support of former dictator Augusto Pinochet. A banner proclaiming Chile's national sovereignty was held up while supporters sang the national anthem. Marcela Zbinden, president of the young faction of the U-D-I said that the national motto guided their actions. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We will not rest until we resolve this situation, and we will do everything in our power to protect our sovereignty, and the essential Chilean values. Because of this, the motto of our national coat of arms will always be present in our minds and hearts which shows us how to act when Chile is offended. By reason or force." SUPER CAPTION: Marcela Zbinden, President of the Young U-D-I Police forces stood by in case of any confrontations. The demonstrators were then escorted from the square by police. Onlookers reacted angrily at what they claimed was police protection. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Because in this country for 25 years they haven't been able, they haven't had the guts to judge Pinochet and all his cronies . And we consider this unjust, this a joke because poor people have been repressed. If it had been the left, or a democratic movement that had staged this protest, the police would have broken it up by force." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop As the pro-Pinochet group marched down Santiago's streets more people began to heckle the group. A bout of shoving ensued but things remained under control. Anger towards the police, however, remained. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "This is ridiculous, how can they defend an assassin, an assassin that killed our people. They shed the same blood they carry in their veins, and the authorities permit this protest. When we go to defend our rights, they stop us with blows, with sticks, with kicks as if we were delinquents. They are the assassins. They have the arms, they can kill people. We are defenceless." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop The British Home Secretary, Jack Straw, is to give his decision by December 11 on whether Augusto Pinochet will be extradited to Spain. Pinochet was arrested in London on October 16 on a warrant from Spain charging him with responsibility in the deaths or disappearance of over three-thousand people during his rule.
