Today's adventure takes us back to one of my favorite spots, the Tuckasegee River between Cullowhee & Sylva North Carolina. It was definitely an on/off day with large amounts of time between catches & I lost 5-6 fish just by spitting out the hook or straight-up breaking the line off. There must have been a good size tanker under the bubble line but I'll never know now. I used a brown trout colored rooster tail for most of the day https://amzn.to/3P6Spix on the Berkley 5'6" Lightning rod https://amzn.to/3FoCsPr with 6 lb braid line tied to 4 lb flourcarbon. Caught a bunch of rainbow trout, the biggest was the first. Add in 2x brown trout for good measure. It was this same area that I caught the 18" rainbow at the beginning of the year, so I tried out a single hook Rapala rainbow lure I had & surprisingly had some good luck with trout chasing it down. I even had a bite about 5' from me. Problem was they were all smaller rainbows which is weird since the size of the rapala would choke them to death.lol BUT that tells me that when it does land in front a tanker its a done deal. Had I put on a smaller single hook I would've brought in the one bite I had on it. Old man Mike has told me several times that if I want to grab a giant I need to use a Rapala. Underscoring this is that the state record Brown trout (24 lbs!!!) being nabbed back in the 90s on a Rapala #9. My life goal is to break that record. At least it wasn't a skunk like my last trip out that way. As always, KEEP IT CLEAN. KEEP IT OPEN. At WBO we believe it is our God-given responsibility to be good stewards of our outdoor spaces. Whether you're overlanding, off-roading, fishing, hiking, or hunting, always pack out what you haul in. If you can, bring an extra trash bag & pick up some of the garbage the worst of society leaves lying around our streams & trails.
