(29 Jan 2019) The US is trying to broker an understanding between Kurdish forces, fighting the Islamic State group in Syria, and the Turkish government, which views these forces as a security threat and has threatened to invade their enclave in the country's northeast, a senior Syrian Kurdish politician said. Speaking to The Associated Press in Washington, DC, where she has been meeting US officials, Ilham Ahmed said that so far it was unclear whether the American mediation will be successful. She rejected the Turkish plan to create what Ankara has called a 'safe zone' inside Syria, saying it amounted to little more than a Turkish 'colony'. Ilham Ahmed is co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The US-backed SDF is a Kurdish-led militia that's been fighting the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, by the end of January cornering them into two villages near the Iraqi border. Ankara, however, views the SDF as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency in southeastern Turkey. "The (US) have said on the media that they will not accept any attack on their allies who fought Daesh (the Islamic State group). But the mechanism for this protection remains unclear to us," Ahmed said. "The area must be under the control of our local forces and it must be protected by it. If there is a compromise, we will accept having international monitors on borders to be chosen by the United Nations." Ahmed warned that despite losing almost all of its territory in Syria, IS has retained sleeper cells which may be "re-energized" after the upcoming American withdrawal from the country. She called for a comprehensive agreement for eastern Syria with the inclusion of the Kurdish self-governing institutions in the constitution but added that no serious talks were underway on this point with the Damascus government for now.
