The Four Mile Trail in Yosemite National Park climbs from the valley floor to Glacier Point, offering a challenging yet rewarding hike with sweeping views of the park’s iconic landscapes. Beginning near the Yosemite Valley Lodge, the trail ascends over 3,200 feet in 4.8 miles. Although its name suggests otherwise, the trail length reflects the original design from the late 19th century before modern improvements extended it. The switchbacks climb steadily through shaded pine forests, gradually revealing breathtaking vistas of Yosemite Falls, Sentinel Rock, and El Capitan. Midway, hikers enjoy unobstructed views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley below. As the trail nears Glacier Point, the terrain opens to granite slopes, and the panoramic views become even more spectacular. Glacier Point itself provides one of Yosemite’s most famous overlooks, with sights of Vernal and Nevada Falls, Half Dome, and the surrounding Sierra peaks. While the trail is steep and strenuous, it is well-maintained and accessible for experienced hikers. Many opt to hike one way by arranging a shuttle from Glacier Point. In winter, sections of the trail may close due to snow, making summer and early fall the best times to visit.
