Huge fire at Nechells recycling plant as major incident declared West Midlands Fire Service crews are at the scene of a major blaze at a recycling centre in Nechells, Birmingham, where thousands of tons of cardboard and paper have gone up in smoke. More than 20 pumps and 110 firefighters are in attendance at the scene at the Smurfit Kappa facility, where the fire service said crews are working "extremely hard". Local residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed while firefighters work to extinguish the blaze. The A47 Heartlands Parkway was closed in both directions due to the fire and remains closed out of the city centre.
